Jason and I decided that we both needed a mini vacation so we decided to drive to Kansas City for Memorial Day weekend. Between wedding planning and Jason taking two classes we have hardly had a minute to ourselves lately!
The weekend started off with a fantastic dinner at Kemoll's in downtown St. Louis to celebrate Jason's parents 25th wedding anniversary! The food was amazing and we had a great time with Jason's family. Then it was off to celebrate another occassion - my brother's 28th birthday! We met Brandon and a group of friends at Sage and attempted to sit outside on the patio and enjoy some drinks. But it was a bit too cold and windy so we moved the party inside. My brother had a great time and it was nice to spend the evening with friends.
Saturday morning we woke up, packed, and were on the road by 11 on our way to KC. I was a little concerned that our weekend would be ruined by storms. It was starting to rain in STL when we left and the forecast for KC was no better. But about halfway there the rain stopped and by the time we got to KC it was sunny and beautiful! We checked into our hotel and decided to take advantage of the nice weather. We were in walking distance of the Plaza so we decided to go and do some shopping. For those of you who have not been to the Plaza, it's a beautiful outdoor area with tons of shops and restaurants and it's a great place to just walk around and people watch! Jason and I had another awesome meal that night at M&S Grill. We sat outside and enjoyed a nice leisurely dinner and some of the best seafood we have ever had! After dinner we decided to walk down to the movie theater at the other end of the Plaza and see what was playing. We settled on The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. We both really enjoyed it!
Sunday we slept in and woke up to another beautiful day. We walked back to the Plaza and sat outside at a little coffee shop and did some people watching. Lots of interesting folks in KC! We met up with my friend from college, Derek, and had lunch at an Irish Pub. Later, we decided to go watch Derek play in his sand volleyball league. We drove all the way to Kansas to find out the game was canceled! Oops! We headed back to the hotel to freshen up and then met back up with Derek to explore the new Power and Light District. KC has done a lot to revamp their downtown including developing the Power and Light District which is an area of bars and restaurants that all surround a big courtyard. It kind of reminded me of a nicer, more up to date version of Union Station in St. Louis. We had a great time hanging out with Derek and exploring KC! Monday it was back to St. Louis. We had dinner at my parents house and then it was back to reality and work the next day!
It was so nice to get away for the weekend. I think Jason and I both realized things had gotten a bit hectic and it was just time for some "us time". As we move forward and into our marriage, I think this is something we should always be aware of. Realizing when it's just time to get away, relax, and let go for a bit. After all, everything will be there waiting for us when we get back!
