Happy Birthday Jason!!

Today is Jason's 25th birthday! It's hard to believe he wasn't even of legal drinking age when I met him! Unfortunately, we won't be doing much celebrating today due to snow, work, and school. So we've had to spread the celebration out over the week...everyone should celebrate their birthday for a whole week, right? We had a great dinner on Saturday with Jason's family and then my parents and Brandon joined us for cake and presents back at out place. This weekend we are having our friends over for a party and Wii tournament! I better brush up on my Wii skills :)

I couldn't resist pulling this picture out ;) Happy Birthday, Jason. I love you!

Its official...we're going to Maui for our honeymoon! We booked our tickets and hotel yesterday. I don't know what we're more excited for: our wedding or the tropical excursion that will follow.

Remembering Grandma Babe

My Grandma Ross (or Babe as she was known) passed away this time last year. Shortly after she passed away, I took an online writing class. Our first assignment was to write about "the window". That was all the instruction we got. I ended up writing a piece about my Grandma's house and a specific window there. It was an emotional thing for me to write, but also very effortless. It's easy to write about things that are so close to your heart. I shared it with my family over the weeeknd, and my Aunt Barb suggested I post it here, because Grandma Babe would love that! And she's right. My Grandma would love nothing more than being a blog star, showing off her house and reminding everyone that she threw the best parties :) So here it is.

The Window
Growing up, one of my favorite places in the world was my Grandma’s house. Going there always meant lots of family, chaos, and Grandma’s famous homemade chocolate chip cookies! It was the gathering place for many holidays over the years. Thanksgivings filled with laughter, increasing throughout the day with the increased consumption of bottles of wine, Easter egg hunts with all the grandkids darting around the backyard to find the most eggs, and Christmases filled with flying wrapping paper and shrieks of excitement. My Grandparents had lived in that house since 1955. My dad and his 4 siblings grew up there and it was one of those houses where you walked in and thought “If these walls could talk…”

My favorite room in the house was the “yellow” room, the spare bedroom that had yellow flowered wallpaper and a yellow comforter. However, when visiting I usually slept in the “little” room, named so for its smaller size and because it had a twin bed as opposed to the full beds in the other rooms. Only at Grandma’s house does each room have a name! The kitchen was always the busiest room of the house. Everyone gravitated there to enjoy snacks while waiting for dinner and to help out when Grandma would allow it. The kids would spend their time playing on the floor in the family room, where no doubt one Uncle or another would be asleep on the couch and the older kids would be watching TV.
The living room was the quietest room of the house. This is the room where the adults would go to have adult conversations and get away from the chaos for a bit. An old grandfather clock stood tall in the corner chiming every fifteen minutes. Antique furniture filled the room and black and white photos of ancestors decorated the walls. In the center of the room was a large picture window. Framed by two wingback chairs, the window looked out onto the street in front of the house. Nestled in the window was a small table where an old red lamp sat on a doily. This window would be the first thing I would look for as we drove down the street, arriving at Grandma’s house because the lamp was always on, no matter the time of day. It was the sign that Grandma was home and anxiously awaiting our arrival. In the 25 years that I went to that house; there was not one time where that window was not lit up.

My Grandma passed away this past January after a year long battle with cancer. Once again her house was the family gathering place. We met there and we told stories and we laughed and we cried. We celebrated the way that we knew she would have wanted us too. The day of the funeral was cold and dreary as if all the angels above were mourning with us. Their tears falling in rain drops. After the memorial service at the church, the caravan of vehicles took the long way to the cemetery so we could drive past Grandma’s house. And as we approached the house, I looked for the window. And there it was, lit up by the old red lamp just as it always had been. It was the sign that Grandma was home and anxiously awaiting our arrival.

Another year in the books

So 2008 went out with a bang (and then a little fizzle). We had a great Christmas with friends and family. We spent Christmas Eve with my immediate and extended family. Christmas day was spent with the Ross clan. The subsequent days were filled with plenty of good food and Wii playing (Lauren's present to me). Lauren soaked in the time with her niece Millie (and the rest of her family of course). Here is a link to some of our pictures.
After Christmas we worked for a few days and then enjoyed a few more days of freedom. Unfortunately for myself and Lauren, those days were free but not healthy. I came down with a pretty nasty cold and was out of commission New Years Eve and New Years Day.
Yesterday I was back to 100% and last night we went to our friends', Jessica and Daniel, wedding. It was at the 9th Street Abbey in Soulard. We had a really good time and are very happy for the two of them.

4 years and counting

This past Thursday, Lauren and I celebrated our 4 year anniversary...of the dating variety. It will be the last of its kind for us. We went to a tapas restaurant called Barcelona (side note: after a previous visit to this restaurant we were describing it to my parents. The look on my mom's face during the conversation was one of shock and amazement. It turns out that she thought we were saying that we had eaten at a topless restaurant as opposed to a tapas restaraunt...apparently I didn't annunciate while describing our evening.) The food was really good and we had a great time reminiscing. The years have gone by quick and this next one will probably go by even faster as we prepare for the wedding.

Over the weekend we enjoyed plenty of family time. We baked Christmas cookies ate dinner with my parents on Saturday. We made chocolate chip, peanut butter and monster cookies (not to be confused with cookie monster which is what Lauren calls me around this time of year...I find it difficult to refute her claims)

And on Sunday we helped Lauren's parents decorate their Christmas tree. This weekend was a definite sign that Christmas is fast approaching...
No complaints from this guy (or Lauren for that matter)

We're still here...I promise

So maybe we haven't been the best about updating our blog regularly...but we've been kind of busy so you'll have to forgive us...please.
November has brought some great times:

We celebrated my Dad's 60th birthday and my younger sister's 22nd. Both seemed to make me feel old. I understand that I'm not actually old but in relative terms those numbers were somewhat staggering.

Of course we celebrated Thanksgiving and I for one ate my weight in the traditional fixings. Lauren was a little more conservative. I don't think anyone will be shocked at the fact that I have what some call a healthy appetite.

We also took the weekend to decorate for Christmas

Lauren, my sister Erin and I went to Kansas City to watch Mizzou take on the hated Jayhawks. The Friday night before the game was a lot of fun. We saw a lot of friends and laughed the night away. Game day brought an early morning, a really good game, a really bad ending and even worse weather.
Here are some pictures:

The following weekend I once again visited Arrowhead for a Mizzou football game. I took my dad to the Big XII championship game for his Christmas present. It was a really great time except for the outcome of the game and the fact that I don't think I've ever been more cold in my entire life (maybe that's a little dramatic, but it was really cold). But at least it didn't snow the entire time like the week before.
This week has brought the end to another semester of graduate school. I will have about one month off of school and then I will have 6 months remaining before I graduate.
So I think that's a pretty good update and hopefully we will be a little more consistent with posts...but I won't make any promises.

My New Obsession...

Wedding blogs! I had no idea that there was this whole world of wedding blogs out there. Women all over the country have created blogs detailing there own weddings and even helping other brides plan theirs. I have been spending hours on these blogs soaking it all up! It all started when my sister sent me the link to StyleMePretty and I found links to other blogs on that site and links on those sites to other sites and it is never ending! I have gotten a lot of great ideas and inspiration from these blogs. I am now even more determined to make our wedding day extra special and personal after seeing what other brides have done and the little touches that really make a wedding unique. I'm not the most crafty person, but I've found some things that even I can do!

My Inspiration Board - All of the blogs feature these inspiration boards which kind of cut and paste different pictures so you can get an overall feel for the look of the day. I played with this thing for days trying to find the right combo of pictures! This is what I came up with. I really wanted to see if the BM dress and the pink accents would "go" with our venues. What do you think?

My other new obsession seems to be the color fuschia as you can see from my inspiration board. This color kept sticking out to me in pictures and I do love pink! I think it will make a great accent color and really pop!

During my blog browsing I discovered a website where you can design your own
stamps! I think this is a really cute idea!

I also found my invitation vendor through one of these blogs,
LoveAtFirstInvite. Cathy lives in San Francisco and started her wedding invitation business out of her home after her own wedding. I think her designs are gorgeous and her prices beat some of the local vendors I looked into. She sent me a 3 page questionnaire to fill out with all the details of our wedding and will work off that to create something just for us! I can't wait to see what she comes up with!
